Topic 1 & 2:

New Drug Update Part 1 & 2:

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

1. Identify recent FDA drug communications, including but not limited to, labeling changes, warnings, new indications, new dosage forms and MedWatch alerts. 2. Discuss the new drugs with respect to their pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, approved and unapproved indications. 3. Describe their adverse effects and drug interaction that may affect patient compliance. 4. Compare efficacy, dosage and cost to existing agents. 5. Discuss the patient oriented outcomes or evidence that may or may not exist for each of the new medications and when they may or may not be appropriate to recommend for selected patients. 6. Compare pharmacotherapy outcomes vs cost/benefit between newly approved agents and existing or lower cost agents.

Pharmacy Technician 1. Identify recent FDA drug communications, including but not limited to, labeling changes, warnings, new indications, new dosage forms and MedWatch alerts. 2. List the new drugs with respect to their, approved indications. 3. Compare cost to existing agents.

Topic 3: Evidence-based Medication Therapy Management to Optimize Patient Outcomes

This case-based seminar will focus on the safe, effective and affordable use of evidence-based pharmacotherapy comparing new agents against existing agents and the high-level knowledge required to help patients and providers optimize therapeutic outcomes for individual patients. Participants will be given a set of typical patients from a primary care practice setting.

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

1. Evaluate multiple primary care patient cases exhibiting commonly seen medical problems. 2. Demonstrate motivational interviewing techniques for a diverse range of patients. 3. Interpret patient-specific case data, issues, and medication therapies to identify medication-related problems. 4. Suggest goals of therapy for each medical condition and medication-related problem identified. 5. Formulate plans to resolve medication-related problems. 6. Analyze pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes when reviewing an elderly person's medication regimen. 7. Recommend appropriate, evidence-based, cost effective therapies to replace inappropriate therapies to improve patient outcomes. 8. Effectively communicate recommendations to other health care providers.
